For what purposes did the French Algerians use religion?

And why would Meursault reject religion as a result? For those who haven't read The Outsider by Albert Camus, Meursault is a character who goes against social convention and is a bit of an 'Outsider'. He is French Algerian. Any suggestions would be helpful :) Thank you.
