Why was General Raoul Salan's command style more efficient and aggressive in Algeria than in Indochina?
Salan was French commander in Indochina for only one year.During that time he dealt with constant interference from his neurotic civilian government, who made it difficult for him to pursue any kind of consistent strategy. The political situation in Algeria was completely different.Indochina was considered a French colony.Algeria,at the time of the war of independence, was considered to be a part of France itself.(Algerique Francaise.)Therefore, more ruthless military tactics were permitted.(Think how hard America would fight for Texas,as opposed to its own neurotic policies in Vietnam.)Also,in Indochina the Viet Minh were successfully supplied from China. In Algeria, the French military was able to isolate the country to cut off almost all outside assistance to the FLN.So the short answer to Salan's differing strategies and results on the battlefield is - politics.Salan is one of my personal heroes, being one of the four generals who started the Organisation Armee Secrete and was OAS commander.I am very impressed with you for reading about Indochina and Algeria in FRENCH!So I bow to the master.
